Red Yemeni Aqeeq Silver Ring — Translucent Oval Cabochon

$284.00

A handmade sterling-silver ring set with a genuine red Yemeni aqeeq — a warm, translucent agate that has been worn across the Muslim world for centuries. The stone is cut as a smooth oval with only the gentlest curve to its face, and polished so the colour reads clean and even.

The piece can be made again to order, and your own phrase, name or symbol can be engraved on the stone if you would like one.

Crafted to Order

Each ring, pendant or bracelet is made only after you order — to your size, stone and details. Crafting takes 4 to 8 weeks, plus 1 to 2 weeks for international shipping.

The Stone

This is a genuine red Yemeni aqeeq — the stone the trade still measures other red agates against. Its colour is a deep, warm red that turns lighter and more luminous where light passes through it, and darker where the stone sits thickest.

The face is cut as an oval with only the slightest curve to it — no facets, no engraving — so there is nothing to break up the colour. The faint paler bands you may notice as the stone turns in the light are natural to agate, and are one of the simplest ways to tell a real stone from glass.

Why Yemeni Aqeeq

Yemeni agate is prized for the depth and evenness of its red, and for how well it takes a polish. Traditional heat treatment — the rough stone warmed slowly over days — has been part of preparing Yemeni aqeeq for as long as the trade has existed. It is what draws the red forward, and in this stone it is expected and accepted rather than anything to hide.

What Tradition Says

Aqeeq is spoken of in Muslim tradition as a stone worn for protection and for steadiness of heart. It is said to settle worry and to bring a measure of calm to the one who wears it, and red aqeeq in particular is traditionally associated with strength and self-assurance.

These meanings come from long-standing belief and custom, not from any claim we make about this object itself.

Made at Our Own Bench

The silver is cast, then hammered, sawn and filed into shape, and every design, pattern and texture in the metal is worked onto the piece by the craftsman’s own hand before the whole is polished from a rough finish up to a bright shine. The stone is then set and the ring finished to order.

Working this way does not mean working without tools — a jeweller’s bench has never been without drills, burrs and rotary tools, and our craftsmen use them. What it means is that every line, every cut and every stage of the finish is judged by a trained eye and set by a steady hand, rather than reproduced from a die.

Make It Yours

The stone is left plain, but it does not have to stay that way: a phrase, a name, a date or a symbol of your choosing can be engraved on it, by hand or by machine. Engraving may carry a small additional cost, which is agreed with you before any work begins.

The band is resizable to your exact size, and this design can be made again to order, so you are not limited to the single piece shown.

Wearing and Care

Agate is a hard, dense stone and takes daily wear well — it is one of the more forgiving gemstones to live with. Keep it away from bleach, strong household cleaners and perfume applied directly to the stone, and wipe it with a soft dry cloth when it needs it.

The silver will darken slightly over time, most of all in the recesses. This is natural oxidation rather than damage, and many owners come to prefer it; a light polish with a silver cloth brings the brightness back whenever you want it.

What Arrives

The ring in the photographs is the piece as it is made now: a red Yemeni aqeeq cut as a smooth oval, set in 925 sterling silver. Because agate is a natural stone, a piece made to order will be matched as closely as possible to what you see here, though the exact depth of colour and the run of the faint banding will never be identical from one stone to the next.
