The Stone
Green agate, cut as a round with a flat, polished face — a shape that gives the engraver a clean, even field to work on and keeps the inscription readable at a glance.
Agate is a chalcedony quartz: dense, hard-wearing, and one of the steadier stones to live with day to day. The colour runs through the body of the stone rather than sitting on the surface, and small variations in tone across the face are natural to it.
The Engraving
The stone carries a hand-cut inscription:
يا أمير المؤمنين
It reads Ya Amir al-Muminin — “O Commander of the Faithful” — the title by which Imam Ali (a) is addressed. The words are not cut plainly across the middle: the calligrapher has drawn them out into a composition that fills the whole face, the long strokes sweeping across the stone and the spaces between them filled with fine floral work. Read it once and the phrase resolves out of the pattern.
It is worn as an expression of attachment and respect, not as a claim about any property of the stone itself.
What Tradition Says
Agate is spoken of in Muslim tradition as a stone worn for protection and for steadiness, and rings set with it have a long history in the region. It is said that wearing agate settles the heart, and green stones in particular are traditionally associated with calm and renewal.
These meanings come from long-standing belief and custom, not from any claim we make about this object itself.
Made at Our Own Bench
The silver is cast, then hammered, sawn and filed into shape. The flowers and leaves on the band are chased into the metal by hand, punch by punch, before the whole is polished from a rough finish up to a bright shine. The stone is then set and the ring finished to order.
Working this way does not mean working without tools — a jeweller’s bench has never been without drills, burrs and rotary tools, and our craftsmen use them. What it means is that every line, every cut and every stage of the finish is judged by a trained eye and set by a steady hand, rather than reproduced from a die.
Make It Yours
The inscription is not fixed: a phrase, a name, a date or a symbol of your choosing can be engraved in its place — or alongside it, if you would like to keep the existing words. Engraving may carry a small additional cost, which is agreed with you before any work begins.
The band is resizable to your exact size, and this design can be made again to order, so you are not limited to the single piece shown.
Wearing and Care
Agate is a hard, dense stone and takes daily wear well — it is one of the more forgiving gemstones to live with. Keep it away from bleach, strong household cleaners and perfume applied directly to the stone, and wipe it with a soft dry cloth when it needs it.
The silver will darken slightly over time, most of all in the recesses of the chased work. This is natural oxidation rather than damage, and many owners come to prefer it — the pattern reads more clearly for it; a light polish with a silver cloth brings the brightness back whenever you want it.
What Arrives
The ring in the photographs is the piece as it is made now: a green agate cut round with a flat face, engraved by hand, set in 925 sterling silver with a hand-chased floral band and the back left open. Because agate is a natural stone and every inscription is cut by hand, a piece made to order will be matched as closely as possible to what you see here, though the exact tone of the green and the fine character of the engraving will differ a little from one piece to the next.
