The Stone

The stone is a lab-created emerald: chemically and optically the same beryl as the mined stone, grown under controlled conditions instead of being taken out of the ground. It is cut in the emerald cut — the rectangular step cut developed for this mineral, with long parallel facets that carry the eye down into the colour rather than scattering it back at you.

Look closely and you will find faint internal veils and fine lines within the crystal. These are not flaws in the workmanship; they are inclusions, and they occur in lab-grown and mined emerald alike. A completely clean emerald of this size, at any price near this one, would be the thing to be suspicious of.

Grown, Not Mined

We describe this stone as lab-created rather than mined, and we would rather say that plainly than leave it vague. A lab-grown emerald is real emerald — it is not glass, and it is not a doublet — but it is not a stone that came out of a mine, and the price reflects that honestly.

What you gain is colour and size that would cost many times more in a mined stone of the same appearance, with no question about how or where it was taken from the earth.

What Tradition Says

Emerald has been spoken of for centuries as a stone of clarity and of the eye — it is said to rest the sight and to settle the mind of the one who wears it, and tradition holds that green stones are worn for renewal and for patience.

Made at Our Own Bench

The silver is cast, then hammered, sawn and filed into shape, and every design, pattern and texture in the metal is worked onto the piece by the craftsman’s own hand before the whole is polished from a rough finish up to a bright shine. The stone is then set and the ring finished to order.

Working this way does not mean working without tools — a jeweller’s bench has never been without drills, burrs and rotary tools, and our craftsmen use them. What it means is that every line, every cut and every stage of the finish is judged by a trained eye and set by a steady hand, rather than reproduced from a die.

Wearing and Care

Emerald is hard but not tough: the same internal veils that prove it is a real crystal also make it easier to chip on a sharp knock than agate or quartz. Take the ring off for heavy work and for sport.

Keep it away from ultrasonic cleaners, steam, bleach and strong household cleaners. Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush is all it needs. The silver will darken slightly over time, most of all in the recesses; a light polish with a silver cloth brings the brightness back.

Because each stone is cut individually, a piece made to order will be matched as closely as possible to what you see here, though the exact placement of the internal veiling will differ from one stone to the next.
