The Stone

The stone is a natural agate in a warm, saturated yellow, cut with a flat surface and a squared outline. Yellow agate is the colour traditionally chosen for Sharaf al-Shams, and the pairing of this stone with this inscription is old enough that the two are often spoken of together.

The Sharaf al-Shams Hirz

The hirz is engraved by hand on the reverse of the stone. Worn, it faces inward and is not on display — which is how a hirz has long been carried: kept close rather than shown. The setting is left open behind the stone, so nothing stands between the engraving and the hand.

Sharaf al-Shams is not a sentence. It is a set of seven marks in a fixed order, copied from one engraver to the next. Each mark stands for a single Arabic letter, and each letter opens one of the divine names. The seven letters are those that do not occur in Surat al-Fatiha.

The Seven Names

يا فرد · يا جبار · يا شكور · يا ثابت · يا ظهير · يا خبير · يا زكي

Read right to left, the marks stand for the letters ف ج ش ث ظ خ ز, and through them: Yā Fard (the One), Yā Jabbār (the Irresistible), Yā Shakūr (the Most Appreciative), Yā Thābit (the Steadfast), Yā Ẓahīr (the Supporter), Yā Khabīr (the All-Aware) and Yā Zakī (the Pure).

What Tradition Says

What this design is held to do belongs to long-standing belief and practice, not to any claim we make for the object itself. It is said to be worn for openness in provision and in one’s affairs, and it is often spoken of as a design for turning difficulty toward ease. Tradition also holds that the moment of engraving matters: the hirz takes its name from the point in the solar year at which the sun is said to reach its exaltation, and those who follow the practice regard that timing as part of it.

Agate itself carries its own long association. It has been worn on the hand for centuries and is traditionally spoken of as a stone of steadiness, and of protection from envy. These are the meanings people have carried with the stone; we pass them on as tradition rather than as promises.

Made at Our Own Bench

Every piece is made from start to finish by our own master jewellers. The silver is cast, then brought to its final form at the bench, and every design, pattern and texture in the metal is worked onto the piece by the craftsman’s own hand.

Work of this kind does not mean working without tools — a jeweller’s bench has always had its drills, burrs and rotary tools, and a master uses them. What it means is that every line, every cut and every stage of finishing is judged by a trained eye and set by a steady hand, rather than reproduced from a die. It is why two rings of the same design are never quite identical.

A personal engraving can also be added: your own chosen phrase, name or symbol can be engraved on the stone by hand or by machine, and the Sharaf al-Shams hirz can be kept on the back at the same time — it does not have to be replaced. Custom engraving takes additional time at the bench and may carry a small extra cost, which we always confirm with you before any engraving begins.

Wearing and Care

Agate is a hard, durable stone and stands up well to daily wear. Even so, keep the ring away from perfume, household chemicals and abrasive cleaners, and take it off before heavy work. Wipe it with a soft cloth; the silver will darken gradually as it oxidises, which is normal, and a soft cloth brings the brightness back whenever you want it.
