The Stone

Yemeni agate — aqeeq yamani — is the variety collectors reach for first. It is a chalcedony, and what separates the Yemeni material from every other source is the depth and evenness of its colour: a warm red-brown that runs through the body of the stone rather than sitting in bands near the surface. The piece in this ring was chosen by hand for that colour, and for a clean, sound face able to hold an engraving without fracturing.

Agate also takes a polish that few stones can match. Held up to the light, a good Yemeni piece glows from within rather than throwing back a flat surface shine. That inner life is what we select for, and it is the reason the stone is set open at the back.

How the Colour Comes Out

The colour is the stone’s own. Yemeni agate is finished by a slow, controlled firing that cutters in Yemen have practised for generations — a traditional method that tightens the structure of the stone and draws out the colour already inside it.

This is craft, not cosmetics, and it is worth being clear about the difference. Cheap agate is chemically dyed: the colour sits on the surface, fades in sunlight, and tells you nothing about the stone underneath. Traditional Yemeni firing does the opposite — it strengthens the stone and reveals what was always there. A properly fired Yemeni agate is both more durable and more truthful in colour than an untreated one, which is precisely why the method has survived for centuries and why Yemeni stones remain the standard against which other aqeeq is judged.

Aqeeq in Tradition

Among the stones named in Islamic narration, aqeeq appears more often than almost any other. It has long been associated with steadiness of heart, safety on the road, and protection from envy, and it remains the stone most commonly worn on the hand across the Islamic world — not as ornament alone, but as something kept close and worn daily over a lifetime.

We pass this on as tradition and inherited practice: it is what the stone has meant to people for many centuries, rather than a claim we make about the material itself.

The Engraving

Across the face of the agate runs the Wa In Yakad verse, cut by hand directly into the stone:

وَإِن یکادُ الَّذِینَ کفَرُ‌وا لَیزْلِقُونَک بِأَبْصَارِ‌هِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّکرَ‌ وَیقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِکرٌ‌ لِّلْعَالَمِینَ

The verse is worn for protection — against the evil eye, against envy, against unseen harm — and is among the most widely carried inscriptions in the Islamic world, kept on the hand rather than out of sight.

Engraving into agate is unforgiving work. The stone is hard, brittle at its edges, and a single slip ends the piece rather than marking it. Each letter is cut and then checked under magnification before the next one is begun.

Made by Hand, Start to Finish

Nothing here comes off a mould-and-machine line. The silver is cast, and from that point the band is shaped entirely with hand tools: sawn to form, filed true, then taken through successive stages of finishing until the surface runs even. Polishing is done by hand in stages, from coarse through to mirror. The decorative engraving on the shoulders and shank is cut by hand as well, by jewellers who have spent years on this one craft.

This is why two rings of the same design are never quite identical, and why each piece carries the small, honest marks of the bench that cast-and-stamped rings never have.

Wearing and Care

Sterling silver darkens gradually as it oxidises. This is the metal behaving normally rather than a fault, and many people prefer the depth it lends the engraving once it settles in. A soft cloth brings the brightness back whenever you want it. Keep the agate away from household chemicals and perfume, and it will comfortably outlast the band it sits in.
