The Stone

Turquoise is judged first on colour and then on evenness, and this stone answers both. It is a clear sky-blue that holds the same tone edge to edge, with a smooth unbroken face and none of the pale patching or grey veining that lowers the grade in lesser material. It is cut as an oval cabochon — domed and polished rather than faceted, which is how turquoise has always been finished.

Why Neyshabur

For well over a thousand years the mines around Neyshabur have produced the turquoise against which all other turquoise is measured. What sets the material apart is the depth and purity of its blue and the fineness of its texture — a close, even body that takes a high polish and gives the stone its particular glow. Dealers everywhere still use Neyshabur as the benchmark grade, and the finest examples have always been kept rather than sold on. Material of this quality is also increasingly scarce: the best of it has never been plentiful, and less of it reaches the bench each year.

Turquoise in Tradition

Few stones carry as much meaning as turquoise. It has long been worn for protection — against the evil eye, against misfortune on the road — and is traditionally held to draw blessing and increase in what its wearer has. It is also associated with calm: a stone said to settle the heart and lift the spirits of the one who wears it, and one of the stones most often recommended to be kept on the hand rather than put away. These meanings come from long-standing belief and practice rather than from any claim we make about the material itself.

Made at Our Own Bench

Every piece is made from start to finish by our own master jewellers. The silver is cast, then brought to its final form at the bench, and every design, pattern and texture in the metal is worked onto the piece by the craftsman’s own hand.

Work of this kind does not mean working without tools — a jeweller’s bench has always had its drills, burrs and rotary tools, and a master uses them. What it means is that every line, every cut and every stage of finishing is judged by a trained eye and set by a steady hand, rather than reproduced from a die. It is why two rings of the same design are never quite identical.

No Two Stones Are Alike

No two pieces of turquoise are ever the same. Colour, texture and the way light sits on the surface differ from stone to stone, so the piece that reaches you is the one photographed here, not one of a batch. Each stone is chosen at the bench and set on its own — which is why a turquoise can be matched closely, but never copied exactly.

Wearing and Care

Neyshabur turquoise is a natural stone, and a sensitive one. It is softer and more porous than most gemstones, and it responds to how it is treated: worn and stored carelessly, its colour can shift over time and fine coloured veining can appear in the body of the stone. Cared for properly, it keeps the colour you see here.

Keep it away from perfume, cosmetics, household chemicals, soap and prolonged contact with water — turquoise absorbs what it touches. Take the ring off before washing, swimming or applying scent, wipe it with a dry soft cloth only, and store it dry and out of direct heat and sunlight. The silver will darken gradually as it oxidises, which is normal, and a soft cloth brings the brightness back whenever you want it.
